Mini Movie Reviews 5/22

To my millions of readers,
I’m sad (for you) to say that I’ll be leaving in a few hours for a 10-day trip to Italy and one of those former Yugoslavian countries (they’re all the same, right?). I’ll be leaving you with three more mini-reviews and the response I got from the last ones (that I only put online a couple of hours ago and fiddled with it too make it seem I posted it on Wednesday) was amazing. I should really stop using this reading my thoughts software. My butt is itching. Well here you go:

KICKING & SCREAMING (Rated PG for thematic elements, language and some crude humor)

I put this flick on my most anticipated movies for ’05 list for only one reason and that is because it stars Will Ferrell. For a “family film” this really pushes the boundaries because you can really feel all the PG-13 stuff they are trying to sneak in there past the MPAA. The movie is pretty funny but would’ve been hilarious if they just made it PG-13. Will Ferrell screaming at people is one great pleasure and he does it frequently. The movie has many moments that only teenagers and adults would only laugh at like when the team goes to help the two star players at their Uncle’s butcher shop and arrive in at the field covered in blood. If you want to have an enjoyable time at the movies and be able to take the kids then this is one to see.

UNLEASHED (Rated R for strong violent content, language and some sexuality/nudity)

This is a hard movie to describe in a short paragraph. If you want to see an exciting, extremely violent, and sometimes poignant flick then check this out. Jet Li delivers probably his best performance, Morgan Freeman does another great job, and Bob Hoskins revels in his part as the conniving and crooked mobster. The action choreographed by The Matrix’s Yuen Woo-Ping is brutal and great to watch. The way that Jet Li was raised as an attack dog is disheartening and how he falls in love with his new family and becomes a better person is touching. Not a great film but is much better than the usual action flick.

DOMINION: PREQUEL TO THE EXORCIST (Rated R for strong violence and disturbing images)

Now the subject of how this movie came to be will most definitely be expanded on this blog but since I’m so fucking tired right now I’ll just be writing this mini-review. Yeah I said fuck. You have a problem with that, you fucking son of a bitch? To sum up my point on this movie is that I totally understand why Morgan Creek decided to have a new director brought in to reshoot this movie. Not that EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING is any better but the great Paul Schrader was not the right choice to direct this. The movie is slow, not scary and is hampered by the obvious lack of postproduction that was given to Paul Schrader’s version. He handled the movie more as a drama than a supernatural thriller, which is how it should’ve been handled. The remake was a horror film and didn’t work either but was at least some points interesting. When I return I will write a much more detailed essay about my feelings about both movies and the situation that brought both of them into existence.
Grade: C
